Pearly Queens

24 Feb

I love living in East London and seeing all the traditional Pie & Eel shops and old man pubs, I also love spotting a Pearly Queen or King, there’s one that lives in Wanstead I think as I’ve seen her and her hubby heading off into town of a weekend all dressed up in their pearl button finery. It reminds me of living in Cornwall where they love a traditional, (usually ancient and pagan related) events to get dressed up for: Furry or Flora Day in Helston (which I’ve taken part in) and the Obby Oss Festival in Padstow. You can learn all about the history of the Pearlies here

Another famous London based name is Allsaints Spitalfields who are famous for their awesome leather range, this season they are selling a dedication to the Pearly Queens of london in the Shape of the “Pearly Queen Leather Biker”.

Lawd above! i wan’ one. , innit…

HOWKAPOW

22 Feb

My new favourite online shop of the week is HOWKAPOW, set up by husband and wife team Cat and Rog to showcase and promote crafty brilliance of independent designers and illustrators.

What with exciting new living arrangements happening soon all I can think about is new homewares to buy (I probably don’t need them at all, but that does not stop me looking)

Once upon a time in Oz…part 2

17 Feb

After finishing my time at Nicola Finetti I changed states to the lovely New South Wales and the fantastic city of Melbourne (I want to go there again so soon, it really is the most brilliant city!). I ended up living in the trendy / artsy area of town called Fitzroy very close to the uber cool Brunswick Street… it’s a bit like Shoreditch I should think…maybe a bit less grubby!

I did pick this area carefully as my next placement a couture shoe designer called Preston Zly was based there, so all I had to do was drag myself outta bed and walk down the street and spend all day helping to make shoes! Brilliant! As a thankyou I got a beautiful pair of shoes made for me!

Here’s a couple of my favorites from their Spring Summer 2012 Collection called Oceania

These are from their AW11 collection called Empire, I had to sneak them in because they are just so gorgeous!

SHOE LUST !

oh Miss L Fire and you sneaky peak preview of your Spring Summer 2012 collection… naughty!

Once upon a time in Oz….

16 Feb

Whilst I was at University (which seems many MANY years ago now) I had the amazing opportunity to spend an entire year doing work experience abroad, the other people on my course went all over the world from New Zealand to Paris to Germany, I ended up in Australia. I love it down under, I’ve got a lot of relatives out there and had been out there to see them before, so I took this excuse to get our there again.

I had 3 different work placements whilst I was out there and I’ve always kept an eye on what they have been up too since I finished my work placements and thought it’d be nice to see what they were doing this season. The first designer I worked with was Nicola Finetti in Sydney

The gorgeous garments produced by this Italian born designer are loved by the Australian and International Stars, even my idol Dita Von Teese. I love the use of lace with bright colours in his Fall 2012 collection.

I like gin….

14 Feb

I love gin…tea too, both in equal measure although I’ve not combined the two just yet, further than drinking gin concoctions from a tea cup. I could go rambling on about my favourite gins and teas (Hendricks & Blackwoods gin & Yorkshire Tea to cut a long story short) but I won’t so I’ll just leave you this Aldi advert which just makes be giggle so much

Decadent PARIS – BOMBAY

12 Feb

I’ve always been overwhelmed with the talent of Karl Lagerfeld st CHANEL, I am a little speechless after seeing the 2012 Meitiers D’Art Collection PARIS – BOMBAY a sumptuous collection inspired by Bombay. If I were a millionaire I’d be buying a few pieces for my friend Rohini’s wedding in Bombay in November. Instead it will just have to be my inspiration!

It was shown at the Grand Palais and decked out like a grand magical Indian Palace  throwing a decadent banquet! Gorgeous!

Also have a look at this video showing the amazing amount of work that went into the embellishments and jewellry used in this show, it’s really quite something.

Here’s a few stills of my favourite looks

Speedy DIY Bunting!

10 Feb

This is a really quick DIY project that makes an easy decoration or present to brighten up any room! All you need to make this bunting is:

A Sewing Machine

Thread

Scissors

Pieces of woven fabrics in complimentary prints / colours / designs

2mt Length of 1 Inch Cotton Tape or Ribbon

All you need to do is cut the fabrics into triangles and stitch them in a random order (I like to use a zig zag stitch in a contrasting colour) along the cotton tape or ribbon and hang it up on the wall! EASY PEASEY!

Simple Little Girls Skirt

9 Feb

It’s my little niece’s 2nd Birthday on Valentines Day and I’ve made her a very sweet and so incredibly easy skirt as a present. I’ve followed the directions in my Cabbages & Roses “Home Made Vintage” book for Child’s Patch Skirt, this projects in this book are so quick and simple and great for someone like me who does have a big wooden blanket box full of lovely fabrics that I’ve been collecting over the years.

The skirt is basically a circle of fabric, with contrasting patch pockets, gathered at the waist with elastic. I also found a length of sweet lacy cotton trim that I added around the hem.
